World Water Day 2021

World Water Day 2021

World Water Day 2021

Today is World Water Day. It has been celebrated by the UN (United Nations) on the 22nd of March since 1993. It raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people who are living without access to safe, fresh water. This years theme value.  It looks at what water means to different people and its true value as a vital resource. Water has a huge value to our culture, households, health and education. It is important we seek to protect this precious resource. It's dangerous to overlook clean water as something infinite as many of us take it for granted. Due to population growth, increased urbanization and economic development, the quantity of wastewater generated and continuing pollution load are increasing globally. Something has to change before it is too late. But, how can we help?

The Value of Water

Water often represents life, rebirth, purity and wisom. It has had an impact in the rise and fall of many civilisations across the globe. As the only known planet in the universe to have surface water, we know all too well that valuing water is vitally important. It is so much more than just its monetary value. The value of water is the value of life itself. The mission of WWD is to bring attention to the need to be more mindful of how we use our clean water. We need to consider how much we are wasting and how we could be poluting our water. When water seems to be in plentiful supply, we can often underestimate the value of water. However, to be able to safeguard water for the benefit of everyone, we must understand water’s true, multidimensional value. How do you value water in your home?

WWD - How much water you use

Water Usage and Quality in the UK

In the UK, the average person uses 141 litres of water per day.  This includes daily tasks such as drinking, washing, and cleaning. Unsurprisingly, showers are the biggest use of water in UK households (25%). This is then followed by flushing the toilet (22%). Other main uses include baths, dishwashers and washing machines. Due to population growth, increased urbanization and economic development, the quantity of wastewater generated and its overall pollution load are increasing globally. Plastic pollution, nanoparticles and fracking also present potential threats to drinking water quality in the UK.

How to Reduce Water Wastage at Home

Currently, England is facing water supply shortages by 2050 unless rapid action is taken to curb water use and wastage*. There are many ways in which we can help improve water quality and reduce our water wastage. We can help by making little changes to our daily life's. From turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, to not using harsh, toxic chemicals to clean with. Here are some simple things you can do to help:

  • If you have a bath, reuse the water in garden/wash the car.

  • Have a quick 10-minute shower.

  • Full loads in the washing machine/ dishwasher.

  • Don't over water the garden – use a rain catcher.

  • Regularly maintain your central heating system.

How to Improve Your Water Quality

We know we need to be more conscious than ever that we do not waste water and that we need to improve water quality. A great way of doing this is to reduce the risk of lime scale in your home. This allows your appliances to work as efficiently as possible. Hard water and scale build-up is estimated to be responsible for around 70% of appliance failure. Yet, only 6% of people have a softener device to help prevent the build-up. According to British Water, an average family of four accumulates around 70kg of limescale in 12 months. However, only a small amount can affect your heating efficiency and water supply. Find out how you can improve the water quality in your home by reading our blog post Ways to Help Improve Water Quality.
