Gas Safety Week 2021 - 13th to 17th September

Gas Safety Week 2021 - 13th to 17th September

Gas Safety Week - 13th - 17th September

If you’re in the gas industry you’re probably already aware of Gas Safety week. However, if you’re not, it may be something new to you. The campaign is run by the Gas Safe Register to draw awareness to the importance of gas safety in business and domestic use. Gas Safe is now the governing body of legislating gas work in the UK. They’re a great organisation to listen to when it comes to anything gas safety related. As a tradesperson, you need to be registered with Gas Safe to carry out any works on consumer goods such as a boiler, gas cooker or gas hob. Here's what you need to know.

Homeowner Advice

You should always request a gas safety number from anyone doing works on your gas supply, and this can be checked on our website. You can ask for a Gas Safe ID card to avoid the potential of any illegal gas work being carried out without your knowledge. Only qualified gas engineers and companies should work on your gas appliances. Gas Safe makes sure there are no unregistered tradesman working on gas appliances. They ensure all registered tradespeople are kept up-to-date and are held fully accountable for their work. This has also been taken up by boiler manufactures as warranties are generally only upheld if the appliance is fitted by a Gas safe installer and to its stipulations.

Gas Safety Week

Gas Safety Week has been organised by Gas Safe to enhance the awareness of the organisation. This also shows what you, as a consumer, should look out for when dealing with any gas in your home. Everyone should also be aware of any gas appliances in their home and keep on top of the maintenance. There is a reason your boiler needs to be serviced ever year; to keep it and you safe. This is also relevant with other appliances that may emit gas. Unsafe gas appliances can be a danger to your loved ones and your own personal health and safety. This is why it is important to take care of your gas appliances with an annual gas safety check carried out by a registered engineer. This will help keep you and your family safe.

Protect your family

As we know, carbon monoxide can be emitted from your appliances if they’re not maintained properly. Carbon monoxide (CO) is nicknamed the ‘silent killer’ as it is known for its lack of smell and hard to detect nature. It slowly starves the brain and lungs of oxygen, causing a loss of consciousness and killing you, sometimes before you even notice something is wrong. Unfortunately, the warning signs can often be misinterpreted as general tiredness or nausea. The top tip to prevent these risks is to ensure you have a working audible Carbon Monoxide alarm. Although Carbon Monoxide poisoning is rare, it is extremely dangerous. Anyone with any gas appliance or boiler in their home could be susceptible. Installing a carbon monoxide safety alarm is the best way to keep everyone in your home safe from the poisonous gas.

Google Nest Protect

Mr Central Heating recommends the Google Nest smoke and CO detector. This carbon monoxide alarm has an industrial‐grade smoke sensor. It tests itself automatically and lasts for up to 10 years – available in wired and battery. It even tells you what’s wrong and can send an alert your phone. We always want to promote the importance of gas safety, regardless of the time of year. If you’d like to find more gas safety advice and learn about the dangers of Carbon Monoxide, we have some great information for you here.
