Sustainability
Mr Central Heating is committed to supporting sustainability initiatives and doing what it can to support the governments pledge to decrease emissions by 80% by 2050. Essentially, we need need to replace the high carbon fossil fuels that we currently use to heat our homes with low carbon fuels. This will require a big change to the U.K. heating industry and for consumers of heating products.
Being environmentally responsible in our industry can be a little tricky. Until recently, recycling certain components and appliances has been difficult to say the least. Mr Central Heating wants to make it easier for you to do your bit. We created the BoilerBox to enable you to recycle old boilers and the waste materials. For a small fee, we will collect your old boiler. This means that you don’t have to store it or worry about how it’s being disposed of. We can guarantee that at least 60% of the material from the boiler will be recycled so you can have peace of mind that you’re helping the planet as well as using this efficient and convenient method for your waste disposal.
Mr Central Heating has joined Policy and Carbon Connect in order to understand what is the future for the gas network and boilers. Their mission is to lead the development of new policy ideas through evidence and collaboration. The Sustainability team at Policy Connect works closely with Parliamentary Groups for Climate Change and Sustainable Resources and Carbon Connect, the Sustainable Resource Forum and the Westminster Sustainable Business Forum. The work of the team is aimed towards achieving a resource efficient economy and resilient communities, supporting the delivery of zero net carbon emissions by 2050.
The future of the gas network and how we burn fuel to heat our homes is in discussion now. As a key supplier within the market, Mr Central Heating has a duty to try and understand how we can all reduce our carbon footprint. We are also highly aware of our impact as a business, and want to make sure we can do our bit to help achieve this target. Any change of gas type or appliance that heats our homes is really important to us and our customers and we want to make sure that we are informed in the best ways we can be. In order to offer you unbiased information we have joined up with Policy Connect and Carbon Connect to gain evidence and collaborate with the industry to tackle this target. We will be using this data to help our staff and customers to understand the transition and ideas that are being researched and policies that are going to come in.
Mr Central Heating is conscious of its impact on the environment and the market that it supplies and wants to do more to make sure it is doing everything it can. With this in mind, Mr Central Heating at the start of 2021 has pledged to save hundreds’ of acres of threatened habitat and wildlife using the World Land Trust to achieve this. They are an amazing conservation charity that works to save the land before it is too late and allows the local communities to benefit by keeping it unchanged and preserved for the future.
The World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity which saves, protects, and restores the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats. Through a network of partner organisations around the world, who engage support and commitment among their local communities, WLT funds the creation of reserves and biological corridors to provide permanent protection for wildlife. WLT has been saving land to save species for more than 30 years, and today their work to protect existing tropical forest habitat, and in doing so lock up carbon and address climate change, is more important than ever to save what remains of these vital ecosystems.
We have donated towards WLT’s Buy an Acre programme and purchased over 150 acres of land in Argentina to help save habitat for wildlife. To date, the WLT has saved over 774,000 acres of land and protected millions of animals. This is just part of a series of initiatives that Mr Central Heating will be undertaking in 2021 to be a much less impactful business.

Mr Central Heating is committed to doing what they can to create more sustainable solutions in the industry, which is why we have introduced the Pump Dump scheme in partnership with Grundfos. We’re asking our customers to dump their old pumps in our stores, so we can send them back to the manufacturer to be reverse engineered. Using a Take Back Scheme, Grundfos then collect the pumps from us and reuse the materials in new pump production. Grundfos is the leading pump manufacturer in the UK and has innovative ways to support the circular economy. All manufacturers of pumps can be dumped, saving more waste from entering landfill and creating an opportunity of new use.
We’ve now added the recycling of packaging to our sustainability mission, to continue to reduce the amount of waste produced by the heating industry every year. We’re encouraging our customers to drop off any of their old boiler packaging including cardboard, shrink wrap and polystyrene at any of our stores across the UK. We want our customers to be aware of the waste they’re producing and ensure that they’re disposing of it in a way that is convineint for them, as well as beneficial to the environment. The packaging they drop off will all be recycled, contributing to the reduction in carbon and assisting the government in hitting its target by 2050.
Do you ever think about where your old boiler waste is ending up? In 2018/2019 there were over a million cases of fly tipping in the U.K. costing councils in England an estimated £12.9 million pounds in clear up and enforcement fees. A third of all incidents reported were ‘small van load’ of rubbish. Perhaps not surprisingly, 31% were counted as electrical waste and white goods. This not only has a detrimental impact on local communities, but can be toxic for the environment. This often results in contamination of soil and damage to natural habitats. However, we have now committed to a recycling scheme at our Mr Central Heating stores. By bringing us your end of life boiler, you are guaranteed that the boiler will be correctly recycled and it will not end up in landfill or adding to waste crime. Correctly recycling a boiler through our BoilerBox scheme will ensure that as much material as possible will be streamed and recycled to reduce our impact on the environment.
At the moment, if you bring back an old boiler, you will get £20 off your next purchase - click on the button below for more information.
