Introducing Underfloor Heating Systems

Introducing Underfloor Heating Systems

Do as the Romans did – Underfloor Heating

Modern underfloor heating (UFH) offers a great solution when you cannot use radiators or are limited for space. It is only natural then, that we see an increase in popularity. However, did you know the idea is much older than you might think? Let’s look at the history of underfloor heating and how it can benefit you, today.

History of Underfloor Heating

A Roman oyster farmer named Sergius Orata was the first person on record to have the idea of heating floors as a heat source. Back then, they didn’t have modern pipework we have today. So, they had to find another way. It was all done with steam and a new way of building the foundations.  He named his invention ‘Hypocaust’ (hypo meaning ‘under’ and caust meaning ‘burnt’).

How it worked

The method behind the invention was a fairly simple one. The floor was raised above the ground by pillars. Then a layer of concrete was poured over the top (the Romans used one of the earliest types of concrete made of gypsum, lime, and volcanic dust). This created a sub-floor space between the floor and the foundations. Smoke and steam were then funnelled into the gaps via a furnace. This would then start to heat the Roman’s favourite choice of flooring, terracotta tiles. They used to design their villas around the hypocaust system to ensure they’d be as comfortable as possible. This type of heating installation must have been a pleasant addition to their villas as the Romans began settling in cold and stormy Britain!

Modern Underfloor Heating Solutions

Today there are different types of UFH that you can buy. One solution is to use wet systems that use hot water to heat the floor using radiant heat. Warm water passes through the pipes in a wet UFH system, and it will heat the floor covering above. You can also get electric systems that use heating cables. These cabels are installed in UFH mats that you can buy as part of an UFH kit to save on installation costs.
