Top Tips for saving energy.

Learn about our top tips for saving energy and money on your heating bills this Energy Saving Week.

Mr Central Heating has always had at its core a responsibility to help save our customer’s money on the central heating that they require. However, with increasing material costs and energy costs, it is becoming difficult to help those on a tighter budget that need the most competitive boiler to heat their family home. As things stand, gas boilers are still the most affordable and efficient way to heat a home. With 24.1 million gas boilers in the UK and over 15m of these combination boilers (HHIC 2021) we have already made a huge dent in the old inefficient boiler market. There is always more to do and it will be a never-ending story to try and reduce energy wastage. By replacing an old boiler, you can increase the efficiency by up to 40% (if the old boiler is over 10 - 15 years old). Although it is top on our list, there are more ways to reduce your energy wastage than just replacing your boiler. Mr Central Heating has some other great tips to save energy.

1. Replace your old boiler

A boiler upgrade should mean you’ve looked at room outputs and heat requirements in your home. If you have chosen a new boiler based on this, it should enhance your energy saving. If your installer is not talking about how your system could be better then you need to ask. Simply adding a central heating additive such as Fernox F1 will increase the boilers efficiency. Adding F3 or any other type of cleaner beforehand will change the temperature that your radiators can achieve and how quickly. When relocating your boiler, you will need to consider insulation. With more boilers being fitted in the loft, insulation should be top on the to do list. Insulation can greatly reduce heat loss and therefore save you energy and money. It is considered bad practice to install a new boiler only for all that new efficient heat to disappear out of the roof. The new boilers also come with modulation, which allows for the burner to decrease as the demand does. It is a bit like a stop/start car which makes a lot of sense in today’s traffic.

Mr Central Heating has some of the most competitive boilers in the market and a service that is unrivalled. We have stock year-round and use our own fleet for quicker deliveries.

2. Upgrade your old hot water cylinder

If you have a larger household and still have an old hot water cylinder and do not want to compromise on output, we recommend upgrading to an unvented cylinder. This is going to benefit your everyday energy use. Traditional copper cylinders have poor insulation and slow recovery times whereas stainless steel, highly insulated unvented tanks are more efficient overall. If you want to remove the large body of water (sometimes over 70 gallons) which is often stored in the loft, unvented cylinders work directly from the mains. New cylinders also have more efficient controls. If you choose the Everflo Indirect System Fits, it is all re-loaded with the latest controls to speed up the installation. Replacing an older cylinder will be more efficient.

3. Secondary hot water pumps

This is often misunderstood topic but something that we at Mr Central Heating can help you with. Have you ever run the tap waiting for hot water, or run the shower until it gets hot? With over 9.1 million homes in the UK owning a stored hot water system, it is likely to happen quite often. If you are constantly waiting for your water to heat up, even with a combi boiler, you may want to look at getting it serviced. Replacing your hot water cylinder could also help reduce the delay. Any new stainless steel cylinder over a certain size will have a secondary return. This means that you get hot water constantly returned to the tap, so there is no more waiting for hot water. This can be further enhanced by using a secondary return hot water pump, like the Comfort Range from Grundfos. A secondary hot water pump works on demand and makes sure that the temperature is always kept at a constant. This is great in situations where the hot water tank, unvented cylinder, is a long way away, so causing a dead leg of pipework containing cold water. You chould save water and energy with the Grundfos UP range as it uses the most up to date technology to mitigate energy usage.

4. Turn down the heat

Data from Uswitch.com suggests that two in three households in the U.K. are setting their heating at over 20°C, but just one degree lower could save them money and help us reach climate change targets. 2.7 million households are setting the temperature of their central heating system to a very toasty 25°C or more. This research goes on to suggest that by turning your central heating down by 1°C could result in a saving up to £80 a year on your heating costs. Collectively, if all the households who normally set their thermostats above 20°C made that change, it would be an overall saving of £1.4 billion.

With a new boiler installation should also come new controls. The Google Nest Thermostats allows for a more intelligent way to heat your home. By turning a thermostat down slightly can save a lot of energy. This makes more sense if you have a room thermostat and thermostatic radiator valves (TRV’s) to work alongside it. We also know that temperature is not just about turning it down but control. Controlling the temperature of the house saves energy, simple. Overheating a house does not benefit anyone. Therefore, keeping a constant mean temperature is the best way to keep energy use low. Getting the right thermostat is essential. Upgrading to a Google Nest Thermostat is an investment that could save you money in the long run. It learns what you like and not only uses online weather data but also how long your system, and ultimately your house takes to get to your comfort temperature. It uses the Green Leaf to incentivise positive actions of saving energy by reducing the temperature. The Nest Thermostat E is easy to fit and replaces any old wired thermostat quickly and with no hassle.

5. Smarter Heating Control

This is a strange way to save energy but not as daft as you may think. Why do we heat our homes when we are not in? How often do you go away for the weekend or even week and do not change your setting on the heating and hot water schedule? This is the reason that occupancy is huge in the energy saving stakes. It makes sense. As a nation, we spend a lot of money on holidays every year. We plan for it. We make sure we have everything we need, we cancel the milk and ask friends or family to keep an eye on the house/pets. Yet the central heating often gets overlooked. This does not have to be the case with a Google Nest Learning Thermostat. It will use your location services through your phone and GPS to ascertain when you are away and when you are back home. It learns from your habits and it learns how long your house takes to warm up. The Nest Learning Thermostat not only predicts your arrival time but heats the house to the perfect comfort temperature for you when you arrive. You can forget about turning the heating off and enjoy your holiday. It’s simple to use and stylish. The Nest Learning Thermostat even provides updates on the weather, and integrates with other Google devices in the home. You can also use your phone to set programs and get notifications on how well you are doing on turning the thermostat down.
